Being a buyer in a seller’s market can be demoralizing. You start out with a laundry list of dreams, and over time, your expectations start to shrink. You wanted an extra bedroom and walk-in closet, but that detached garage is starting to look like a manageable bonus space. You were certain you’d never settle for a yard without a pool, but now you’re overbidding at a place with room for little more than a birdbath. You used to gag at fixer-uppers, and now you are the one telling your realtor, “Oh, it’s just a little hole in the roof.” It’s quite a journey.
And while realtors appreciate the market helping to stave off expectations, the good ones feel for you. We don’t want you to settle. We want you to find a home where you can’t wait to create memories, one that makes you giddy thinking about living there. Sure, you may need to make some sacrifices, save up a little more, or re-think the “must-haves” and the “wants,” but at the end of the day, you are not searching for a house, you’re searching for a home. Don’t settle, like the foundation of that terrible flip you were lucky not to win.
Check your emotions, visualize what your family needs, and talk to your realtor about reasonable expectations. Your real estate agent is a resource, so use them!
We recently had a client let go of a decent deal we had in escrow because it just didn’t feel right. Cold feet is certainly a condition to be wary of, but your gut feeling is still worth valuing for such an impactful financial decision. It’s not an easy choice when you find yourself in a position that often takes several offers to get to, but it was ultimately the best move for this client to cancel. Guess what? This means the home for this house hunter is still out there, and we’re going to find it. So it’s onward and upward!
We don’t just want you to find a place, we want you to find the right place.
